What happened to good judgment?

In the last few weeks, I have been amazed and appalled at the lack of judgment displayed by adults.  Two cases in point…the man on the airplane that popped his fellow passenger in the head because he reclined his seat, and the Congressman with his lewd pictures on Twitter.

I’m particularly disturbed by the Congressman, because he is in a position to make decisions that affect our country.  He says he won’t resign from Congress — really?  Maybe they should set up a “time out” chair in the Capitol so these people who act like juveniles will have a place to go for punishment.  In what universe did he believe his decision to post these pictures would go unnoticed?  If we’ve learned anything about the Internet, it is that there is nothing private…nothing hidden…nothing safe.  His lack of understanding on that point makes me question his intelligence.  So, it appears that his character and his intellect are flawed.  Just the kind of person we need representing us in Congress, eh?

To the guy in the airplane, I’d like to say…”use your words,” just like you’d tell a 3-year old.  Now, to be fair, I wasn’t on that flight, and I don’t know what actually happened.  Maybe he asked first and hit second.  That would be a little better, but not much.  Perhaps the hitter and the hittee need to learn a bit about being less self-centered and getting along with others.  As I’ve often reminded my children (when they were very small), the world doesn’t revolve around any one of us–we have to share, and we have to find ways to deal with other people.

I know these are only two examples of bad behavior, and I can see examples everyday of people who DO behave appropriately.  Maybe we all need to take a deep breath and chill out a bit.  The world can be a trying place–exercising a little self-control can make it a better place for everyone.
