What’s in a name….

Two quick stories:  I’ve been to a particular dry cleaners near my home only about 3 times in the past year.  About a week ago, I dropped off some items to be laundered and cleaned.  When I went by to pick them up last week, I sat in the car for just a minute before going in — it was one of those NPR “driveway moments,” you know.  By the time I got inside, the business owner had my garments pulled and my order rung up.  He greeted me by name as I walked in the door.  I was blown away.  He apparently remembered either my car or my face, and made me feel really special as a result.

Story 2:  At a networking event last week, a new acquaintance made sure to use my name repeatedly during our conversation.  Not too much, mind you, but just enough.  It made me feel as though he was really interested in me.

I’ve heard it said that everyone’s favorite word is their own name.  I don’t know if that’s true, but I did feel honored that both of these people remembered mine and called me by it.  Goes to show — it doesn’t take a lot of effort to make people feel special — just a little, and well worth the effort.
