Cut it out!

Some years ago, a friend of mine introduced me to a concept called “the 10 who do and the 20 who don’t.”  The idea is to make a list of the people in your life who positively impact you (the 10 who do) and those who negatively impact you (the 20 who don’t).  Once identified, you may want to distance yourself from the 20 and spend more time with the 10.  It’s a great concept.

The same could be done with activities.  What are the 10 activities that bring value to your life or your business, and what are the 20 that just eat up your time or make you unhappy or less productive?  Once you identify them, you can take steps to cut out the ones that make you ineffective.  Now, obviously, the numbers may be off here.  Maybe you only have two or three things that really hold you back.  Those are the ones to focus on.

So, here’s the challenge.  Make the list.  Decide to cut out some of the things that will keep 2011 from being the year you want it to be.  That will leave time for the important things that CAN move you to where you want to be.  The choice is yours.

  1. Love this idea! It’s all about eliminating the unnecessary. You can also think of it like this: there’s busy work and important work. Knowing the difference is crucial. You can be busy all the time and get nothing done. Or you can be very selective (discerning) and do IMPORTANT work that makes a huge impact. I’m going for the latter in 2011!
