No news is NOT good news!

My dad used to tease my mom by saying, “I told you I loved you when I married you.  If anything changes, I’ll let you know.”  And then he’d laugh and tell her he loved her.  Just as our personal relationships need on-going feedback and reinforcement to stay strong, so do our professional relationships.

I’m always amazed at the companies who have little to no feedback built into their management systems.  It’s as though they are practicing the “no news is good news” philosophy.  If that worked, it would be great.  It doesn’t generally work.  Those companies are the same ones who complain about performance and are disappointed that their people don’t step up and do quality work.  There is a connection.

What kind of feedback are you giving your team members?  Do you avoid it?  Do you dread it?  Feedback is an opportunity for people to learn and grow.  If handled appropriately, your employees should look forward to feedback, and you should look forward to giving it.
